EBSD

EBSD

EBSD is a technique for material characterisation based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In EBSD, the electron beam is directed across the surface of an inclined crystalline sample. The electrons diffracted at each point form a diffraction pattern, which can be recorded and analysed using specialised hardware and software. The diffraction pattern provides information at each point about the phase and the crystallographic orientation, from which the microstructure can be effectively reconstructed. This enables a comprehensive characterisation of the sample’s microstructural properties. Today, EBSD is fast and fully automated, making it a powerful tool in many industries and fields of research.

Typical applications of this technique include, for example, texture analysis, investigating the evolution of microstructures with temperature, or phase transformations in amorphous and nanocrystalline materials.
